Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy at Narayana’s Hospital, Fatehabad

At Narayana’s Hospital, Fatehabad, we offer safe and advanced colonoscopy services for the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of diseases of the large intestine (colon and rectum). Colonoscopy is a gold-standard procedure for identifying bowel disorders and detecting colorectal cancer at an early stage.

The procedure is performed by Dr. Sandeep Barala, ensuring accuracy, patient comfort, and strict medical safety.

What is Colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure in which a flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope) is gently passed through the rectum to examine the entire colon. It allows direct visualisation of the bowel lining and helps detect abnormalities at an early and treatable stage.

If required, small procedures like biopsy or polyp removal can be done during the same session.

When is Colonoscopy Recommended?

Colonoscopy may be advised if you have:

  • Persistent abdominal pain

  • Chronic constipation or diarrhoea

  • Blood in stools

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Iron-deficiency anaemia

  • Change in bowel habits

  • Family history of colorectal cancer

  • Suspected inflammatory bowel disease

It is also recommended as a screening test for colorectal cancer, especially after the age of 45–50 years.

What to Expect During the Procedure

    • Detailed explanation of the procedure before starting

    • Patient is given sedation or mild anesthesia for comfort

    • A thin, flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope) is gently inserted through the rectum

    • The doctor examines the colon for polyps, inflammation, bleeding, or abnormalities

    • If required, biopsy or polyp removal can be done during the same procedure

    • The procedure usually takes 30–45 minutes

    • After recovery from sedation, the patient can go home the same day

Pre-Procedure Care (Before Colonoscopy)

  • Follow a liquid diet as advised one day before the procedure

  • Take bowel-cleansing solution/laxatives as prescribed to clean the colon

  • Avoid solid food, seeds, and high-fiber diet before the test

  • Inform the doctor about medications, diabetes, heart disease, or blood thinners

  • Arrange for someone to accompany you due to sedation

Post-Procedure Care (After Colonoscopy)

  • Mild bloating or gas may be felt temporarily

  • Resume light meals as advised by the doctor

  • Avoid driving or heavy work for 24 hours due to sedation

  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated

  • Follow medication or dietary advice if biopsy or polyp removal was done

  • Report immediately if there is severe pain, bleeding, or fever
